A New Beginning at Fifty-Five

For thirty years, David climbed the corporate ladder. His job paid well—bonuses, travel, prestige—but every day he felt a quiet emptiness growing inside. He told himself this was success, yet most mornings he had to summon the strength just to face another meeting, another deal, another day that seemed to matter to everyone but him.

One Sunday, his pastor read Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” The words pierced him. Was this really the work God had prepared for him? For weeks, he couldn’t shake the question. He began to pray honestly for the first time in years: “Lord, show me what You made me for.”

At fifty-five, David left the security of his corporate job and followed a stirring that had long been buried—helping others find direction. He trained for a new role in life, a new career as a life and career coach, combining his business experience with his faith. He met people who felt as lost as he once had and helped them uncover their own God-given gifts. Each conversation felt alive with purpose.

The joy that had eluded him for decades finally returned. He woke up eager to serve, energized by every story of transformation he witnessed. Friends noticed a lightness in him—a peace that came not from success, but from surrender.

David no longer measured his worth by income or titles, but by the quiet satisfaction of walking in step with God’s calling. He realized that true success is not climbing higher, but standing out and making maximum impact where God places you—doing what only you were created to do. And in that place of obedience, he discovered the life he had been longing for all along.

You Were Created for a Purpose

God did not create you to be a robot—mechanically doing what others expect or merely going through the motions of life. You were lovingly designed to be His child, created in Christ Jesus for a purpose that carries eternal value. The Bible declares, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT). Pause and let that truth settle in—you are God’s masterpiece, carefully formed, deeply loved, and purposefully placed.

Your life is not random. Your work—whatever shape it takes—is the visible expression of the invisible calling God has placed within you. In every season, God gives you opportunities to serve, to love, and to reflect His character. Wherever He places you, He invites you to play roles that bring light to others and glory to Him. Some roles may change with time, but His purpose for you remains constant: to make an impact for His kingdom.

Think about the experiences, strengths, and relationships you’ve built over the years. None of them is wasted. God weaves them all together, shaping your story into something that can bless others. When your work flows from your identity in Christ, it becomes an act of worship. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

So today, ask God to show you where He wants you to serve most fruitfully. Let your purpose guide your choices, your love fuel your actions, and your faith steady your heart. You have the God-given freedom to choose roles that let your light shine brightly—so others may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

Three Questions to Help You Choose Your God-Given Roles

1. Where has God given strengths?
   As you discover your strengths, look for what makes you come alive. These are not accidents—they are signs of God’s design in you. When you serve from your strengths, your work becomes joyful, fruitful, and sustainable.
2. Who are the people God wants me to impact?
   Roles are played in relationships. God rarely calls us to serve alone. Identify those who share your heart for His purposes—people who encourage, challenge, and support you. Together, you can multiply impact for His kingdom. “Two are better than one” (Ecclesiastes 4:9).
3. Where can I make the greatest impact for God’s glory?
   Look for what delights your heart in God’s kingdom. Look for the roles where your strengths and relationships meet real needs. When your service blesses others and draws attention to Christ, you are living out Ephesians 2:10—doing the good works God prepared for you long ago.

How to Stand Out.

Marcus Buckingham is one of the best-known names in the field of Strengths psychology. In partnership with Harvard Press, he developed the Standout Assessment. Rather than listing dozens of talent themes, it identifies nine Strength Roles, and your top two roles are the ones where you have the most natural “edge.” The aim: to help individuals and teams focus on what they do best, so they can “find your edge.”

The assessment reveals how you tend to operate instinctively—your patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour.  Here are the roles and a short description of each:

1. Advisor – A practical, concrete thinker whose power shows up when reacting to and solving other people’s problems.
2. Connector – A catalyst whose strength lies in bringing people or ideas together to make something bigger and better than it was
3. Creator – Someone who makes sense of the world by pulling things apart, seeing a better configuration, and then creating that new configuration.
4. Equalizer – A level-headed person whose power comes from keeping things in balance — ethically and practically.
5. Influencer – A person who engages people directly and persuades them to act; their power lies in their ability to influence.
6. Pioneer – Someone who sees the world as a place of opportunity around every corner, whose power comes from optimism in the face of uncertainty.
7. Provider – A person who senses other people’s feelings, recognizes those feelings, gives them a voice and acts upon them.
8. Stimulator – Someone who hosts and lifts other people’s emotions, taking responsibility for turning them around and elevating them.
9. Teacher – Someone who is thrilled by the potential in each person, and whose power comes from learning how to unleash that potential in others.
